The purpose of this article is to provide customers with an understanding on the limitations/restrictions that can exist with local calling from international numbers due to the Telecom regulations of an individual country.
If you have been directed to this article, then most probably you are facing call completion issues OR your outbound calls fail when the originating and destination numbers match the same country.
IMPORTANT: Please note for customers using Legacy Outbound Voice Profiles (not Global Conversational) some countries are not supported.
What is local calling?
Any outbound call is considered a local call when the originating number (CLI) and destination number (CLD) match the same country.
Example:
Why are these calls being blocked/failing?
Your calls may be blocked or fail to terminate (SIP 503 response) due to individual Local Country regulations, i.e. Voice Calls bearing a CLI (Caller Line Identification) and terminating to the same country of origin, or those bearing no CLI at all, are subject to rejections from the Local Operators.
These blocks are not made on the Telnyx network, but the call blocks are done by the downstream carriers in order to protect their subscribers from unwanted/malicious/spoofing calls since Local CLI calls cannot be entering a country's International exchanges.
Unfortunately, due to the vast amount of Network Operators and changing regulations of each country, such types of calls might be observed to stop working without prior notice.
These calls are blocked industry-wide and are not exclusive to Telnyx.
Local calling feature from Telnyx
To solve this problem, Telnyx has provided support for the "behind the scenes" local calling routing feature by developing interconnects with multiple Tier-1 Carrier partners in the majority of countries.
With the local calling feature in place, better call completion rate, audio quality & local caller ID delivery are guaranteed. This includes in-country calls to toll free numbers, which can only generally be reached locally and not through international networks.
Also, with the help of the local calling feature, your calls will appear as a local call on the called party/subscribers' phones, which is beneficial in establishing a local presence for your business.
This will be achieved as your calls will be directly routed to the Tier-1 carriers in the respective country of termination.
What are the requirements for using Local Calling?
For utilizing the local calling feature there are no extra charges or configurations associated.
However, the user will have to adhere to the below points:
Procure a DID/number (belonging to the same country) from Telnyx / Port-in your existing number to Telnyx.
A new number request can be made directly on the Telnyx portal or you can also request our numbering team by emailing to numbering@telnyx.com
For exploring the option of porting in your existing number to Telnyx's Carrier Partner, please follow the article - porting policy & procedure
Procedure to procure a number for local calling:
a. Login to Telnyx Portal and navigate to Buy numbers page.
b. Select the country and filter the numbers with "Local Calling" featurec. Choose a number from the available options.
Use this same number as CLI on your outbound calls.
Review our Caller ID Policy and Number Formats which can help with localisation preferences.
What happens if a user is not utilizing the Local Calling Feature?
It is highly advised to use the local calling feature.
However, in case it's not possible for you to procure a DID/number from Telnyx, it is recommended to use an International CLI, i.e. different from the termination country, as CLI for your outgoing calls.
Still, If you are using a non-Telnyx DID, your international calls will be routed via Tier-2 international routes where the caller ID delivery and call completion is best-effort and not guaranteed.
Please also note that in cases where you have purchased a Telnyx DID/number for your international calls, we can only guarantee the local calls to complete when the originating number is used as the caller ID. As such, if you enable call forwarding on the DID/number, local calls may not complete over Tier-1 carriers should the caller's CLI match the CLD of the call forwarding number you have enabled.
